Julie Rutherford is one of Melbourne’s top producers, and fantastic to work with. A producer with the technical knowledge and so experience that you can work through all the elements to craft the look and execution of a project.

The purpose of this shoot was to illustrate the unseen UV sun damage and the befits of using LRP Anthelios sunscreen to protect your skin from harsh sun exposure.

We investigated the use of a UV camera to shoot with beside the A-Cam. This approach was dismissed in preference of an approach of making the effect in post, utilising actual UV imagery of the talent and a sample group as reference for the accuracy of the effect.

We settled on shooting this ad on Canon C300Mk3, using Cooke S4 lenses. I was also able to shoot all the stills for the KV with an R5, on the same Cooke S4 lenses. Shooting stills on manual focus cinema primes is unusual, but does add to the consistency of look to the campaign. And personally, I love the characteristics of Cook S4 lenses.

A lot of this ad is done in the lighting, and thankfully we had a pre-light day to prep and be ready for the following day’s shoot.
Having had the prep day, we were able to have all 6 looks pre programmed on DNX, and equipment setup on, allowing us to move expeditiously through the shoot.

I really enjoyed this one, and being able to craft the light in so many different ways.

Moving into post, I was also the editor and colourist, working with Prodigious’s in-house nuke artist, Matt Brunner to make the accurate UV Camera overlays.

In grade I wanted to bring out the warm skin tones of the Cooke lenses, and grade the Canon tonal palette into much more of an Alexa looking range. A key element of the grade was also to exactly match the colours and tonality of the Anthelios product and branding.

There was a range of campaign edits produced, a 30sec, accompanied my multiple 15sec and 6sec variants with social conform versions. These ran on broadcast and online, with a hero KV that ran on a wide variety of OOH billboard and adshel placements.
