I had a good time one this project. The brief was to complete a fast turnaround content campaign, featuring 10 of Queensland’s top Olympic athletes. We shot up to 4 athlete videos per day, across 3 days of shooting and the edits needed to be turned around ready for the games. As this was content to run during the games, we also had to respect the advertising and brand restrictions.
This was fun for me, as it was a return to my career roots in shooting athletes. While feeling right at home chasing athletes, I had to not forget about the importance of capturing imagery that will enhance the athlete’s storyline of their interviews, rather than just being a series of pretty images. I always wanted to convey a sense of the individual skills involved and unique characteristics of each athlete and sports we covered. As you can see, we went everywhere chasing the athletes in their action environments. I had a a second shooter on shoot to assist, but that still makes a lot of work to run a multicam shoot.
The interviews had to well preped, with developed storylines and in some cases I wrote draft scripts to assist in the process. These we all based on pre-interviews with each of our key talent. I have to give a huge thanks to my producer Kaz, for her assistance in preparing these decks for agency, jumping in to assist and generally making this small crew production a success. I also couldn’t forget to get a few KV stills with each athlete as we went along.
Back in edit, we had a fast turnaround to meet. This drew on my previous sports and commercial experience to develop the final stories and bring the pieces together. Finally I graded all of the films, colour-matching a combination of Sony, Canon and GoPro cameras we had on the shoot.
My favourite part of this concept was my opener, using a fast cut, sound designed opener to grab attention on social, and also be a good teaser for each feature video.
I hope this series is just as fun to watch as it was to create.
